Summer camp

This might be a little off the wall, but "who would have ever thunk?" that No  Limits Diabetes would grow so fast that we had to figure out if we would have to make a waiting list or open more beds????  We decied to open more beds needless to say.  Part of the last minute need came from the temporary closing of Kentucky's camp bringing the need for a camp home for their teens.  Five years ago Max Azarov identified that other area camps for children with diabetes had a pyramid system whcih left mid-teens who did not want to be couselors without a summer program.  The interest level for physically challenging programs for teens just was not there.  Being from Russia, Max also saw that the exchange program had lost its support as well.  Thus came No Limits Diabetes.  The name stated that a person with diabetes should not face life limitations due to diabetes alone AND that any program offered should not have geographical limitations.  Five years ago, 17 teens and adults set out to establish what has grown into a "bulging" teen program now at Spring Hill (AKA Redbrush).  Each year the program has grown and grown to the point that we had 75 teens and adults this summer.  We love the challenge to offer program variation to try to satisfy the new and the return campsers.  Meetings are being started to move to new and different activities for 2011 even as we are still packing up from 2010.  We changed the program this year to have three days of "required" activities to expose teens to the many activities offered at Spring Hill and then two days of "electives" to allow returning to favorite activities.  Zip line, Paintball and Horses remained the most popular; however, weather encouraged us to have more lake activities as well.  Josh Gerstung and Judy Renwick captured much of it in photos which will be added.  Yearbook will follow. (Josh says he took 900 pictures so it will take a little time to trim it down).
We continue to be honored to have teens break away from their busy summer to spend a week with us.  Needless to say--but we should say--the aame is true of the great adults who volunteer their time to guide these teens through a week with us.  Camp could not happen without the devoted efforts of Sondra, Lynda, Pat, Judy and Paula on an "administrative" level.  Also, returning staff like Mike, Anton, Jaime, Jessica, Amy plus the great "new" staff of Charlotte, Annebelle, Anny, Josh, James, Dima, Holli, Craig and Erin.  Max and his business out did themselves with the website and printed materials, Judy with the Shutterfly page.  So many individuals stepped forward to insure that anyone wanting to join us would not be limted by funds.  All in All, it was a great year for No Limits.  Thank you!!
